Neurons and the Brain: Flipping the Fertility Master Switch
How much does the brain have to do with fertility? A lot. Not only does the HPO (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovarian axis) guide the production of fertility hormones, but now scientists believe that neuronal mechanisms may affect fertility.
Neurons called kisspeptin work together to synchronize hormones and build the foundation for natural fertility. If they are out of synch, many hormonal and reproductive issues can develop, such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).
This not only means that there may be more cures down the road for fertility, but many female reproductive system health issues might have more answers and we may be closer on our way to solving issues such as PCOS, or other hormone imbalances that can have a negative effect on female fertility.
